BOSTON – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 3, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Hamilton Nationals midfielder Joe Walters was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week while Long Island Lizards midfielder/face-off specialist Greg Gurenlian earned the League's Defensive Player of the Week award.
In addition, Denver Outlaws attackman Mark Matthews was selected as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week.
Making his seasonal debut, Walters scored four goals and added four assists as the Hamilton Nationals earned their first win of the season with an exciting 17-16 victory over the Charlotte Hounds. Walters tallied five of his game-high eight points as the Nationals snapped their season-opening three-game losing streak.
Walters, who missed the Nationals' first three games while leading the Rochester Knighthawks to the National Lacrosse League championship, was Hamilton's leading scorer last year with 39 points. He recorded 18 goals, including a two-point marker, while setting a team record with 20 assists.
Meanwhile, Gurenlian led the Lizards to a convincing 20-10 victory over the Ohio Machine at Shuart Stadium on Friday night. He won a season-high 22 face-offs in 33 attempts while recording a game-high 12 ground balls, which matched his season high.
In four games this season, Gurenlian has won 62.3 per cent of his face-off attempts while leading the MLL with 39 ground balls. He has recorded 10 or more ground balls in three of his four games this season.
Making his professional debut, Matthews scored four goals and added two assists as the Outlaws dropped a tough 18-16 verdict against the Chesapeake Bayhawks at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday night. He scored all four of his goals in the first half for the Outlaws, who dropped their second game of the season.
Selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft, the former University of Denver standout finished his collegiate career as the Pioneers' all-time leader with 155 goals and 216 points. He earned second team All-America notice from the USILA after leading the Pioneers to their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The MLL season continues this week with four exciting match-ups on Saturday night. The Long Island Lizards will visit the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons while the Charlotte Hounds travel to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to face the Chesapeake Bayhawks.
